RoadRUNNER 2011 Motorcycle Tour in Staunton, VA

Active & Adventurous - Motorcycle Mania

Blue Ridge MountainsEach year since 2006, RoadRUNNER, a motorcycle touring and travel magazine, has presented a touring weekend for motorcycle enthusiasts, with home base, chances to rub padded elbows with other riders, and tours of hand-picked scenic roads.

The 2011 gathering, the 6th Annual Christian Neuhauser Memorial Ride, is based in Virginia’s historic Stonewall Jackson Hotel in downtown Staunton on July 14-17. Tours, both guided and unguided, will wind through nearby Shenandoah Valley on scenic backroads.

This year, the Christian Neuhauser Memorial Ride offers several different touring options, including a new option, to address the skills and comfort level of a diversity of riders.

Riders who choose unguided touring receive detailed maps and can enjoy the roads at whatever pace they desire.

Guided tours are divided into three groups. Sport touring is for experienced riders, knee draggers and their ilk (although RoadRUNNER still encourages all riders to maintain the speed limit). Leisure touring is less challenging but still requires experience. The new group, cruising, will take the roads at a slower pace and may also make more frequent stops. This is suggested for new riders, especially if they are unaccustomed to riding in groups, and for those who simply enjoy stopping to smell the roadside attractions.

Lunch along the routes is included for all participants, whether alone or in a group, and stops for photo-ops and and bum relief.

Some meals are included in the registration price as well.

Optional seminars are also offered during the weekend. Perhaps the most noteworthy is the Stayin’ Safe Advanced Rider Training on Thursday, July 14. These four-hour seminars introduce riding safety principles in real-time via in-helmet radio communication, training participants reading the road, selecting optimum speed and lane positions, increasing safety margins, and making cornering both safe and more enjoyable.

Each issue of RoadRUNNER magazine, in print and online, provides motorcyclists information on national and international tours, both group events and on-your-own rides. Monthly issues also include information on new motorcycles and products. Of special note to AWT readers is that the publisher of RoadRUNNER magazine is Christa Neuhauser, who was co-founder with her husband, Christian, who died in 2005.

More details on the 6th Annual Christian Neuhauser Memorial Ride as well as registration are available at the RoadRUNNER magazine web site.

Rebel at Home

Although writer and AWT founder Annie Tobey was once the proud owner and rider of this Honda Rebel, she now satisfies her need for speed by riding as a passenger with long-time experienced rider, Gary Heiser, on his Yamaha FJR 1300. It has a little more power than her old 250 and Gary's 35+ years of motorcycle riding experience make for safer and more exciting rides. Motorcycle touring satisfies two of her passions: thrills and travel.
