Where can you go that costs little, or better yet getting there is FREE? It’s a place that begins with you. It’s a place that you create. I’m talking about your “own back yard.” Whether you are afforded the expanse of acres of land, a modest spot in suburbia, or a tiny square of space in front of your Fan apartment; each of us has the opportunity to make our piece of green truly unique and beautiful. There are so many choices available today from hanging gardens to window box planters, composting to sun catching ornaments, flowering gardens and vegetable gardens. We are in charge of the space we call our own and we can make it as elaborate or as simple as we choose.

I am fortunate enough to live in a place where outdoor space is ample. But even if this weren’t the case, I would create a space that was my own; a place that allowed me to be in touch with nature and where I could paint the landscape with color, decoration, practicality and beauty. In my backyard I have chosen a small area for an herb garden. It’s only a few steps from my door, and caring for these hearty plants is fairly maintenance free. The great reward of having fresh herbs readily available is apparent when the menu is assembled and the aroma of basil, oregano, mint, rosemary or thyme fills the air.
I have also created special areas for birds and for butterflies in my yard. Butterfly bushes (Buddleias) are a great treasure to any garden or green space. They come in an array of vibrant colors and attract not only butterflies but hummingbirds and beneficial insects too. My butterfly bushes have allowed me the opportunity to photograph varied species of butterflies as they light and enjoy this plant’s sweet nectar. I have also placed feeders around the yard for my sweet feathered friends and have found that black oil sunflower seeds (Southern States 20lb bag-around $10) attract many different birds, and the cost of the seed is actually quite reasonable comparatively speaking when it comes to bird food. I continue to feed “my” birds throughout the year, winter and summer included. In addition to bird seed feeders I have strategically placed humming bird feeders on wrought iron plant holders on my back deck. These staffs with hooks (picked up at Lowe’s end of summer sale) are quite sturdy and I have fastened them at the corners of the deck to hold them in place. Because of their placement, I am able to quietly observe hummingbirds zoom in and out for a drink throughout the morning and evening hours. After years of trying various feeders, the tried and true, plain and simple variety that is red with 4 flower designed feeding troughs seems to be the favorite amongst hummers.

Of course a garden is never complete without flowers. Each spring offers new choices with vibrant colors and hues. Even a small 4 feet x 4 feet space can hold a dozen or more pansies, daffodils, tulips or any flower that speaks to your style. Steps away from your kitchen window, your front porch or back door, you can enjoy the beauty of nature by making the space you have grow green, hearty and as colorful as you wish!
